Jalao is a coconut and honey candy that is most commonly found in the Dominican Republic. It is super easy to make and who doesn’t love honey and coconut? The exact flavor and color of your candy is going to vary depending on the honey you use. This recipe is so much fun as you can really highlight the flavor of different varieties of honey.
This recipe makes about 12 balls.
- 1 teaspoon of oil (to cover tray)
- 2¼ cups coarse coconut flakes
- 1 cup of honey
Grease a tray with the oil.
Mix in honey and 2 cups of coconut flakes into a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Once it reaches boiling, start stirring quickly and continuously until it turns into a darker color (like caramel).
Pour the mixture onto the tray and allow it to cool to room temperature. Once cool, dip your hands in some oil to coat and then make balls. They can then be rolled in coconut or sugar.
