Fajardo Puerto Rico is located on the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico and is a great town to put on your itinerary when visiting Puerto Rico. There are so many things to do in Fajardo, and some of Puerto Rico’s best attractions can be found here.
Primarily, Fajardo is known for the following:
Bioluminescent Bay
Home to one of only 7 Bio-bays in the world and one of the few that are consistently good throughout the year. Accessed from the Las Croabas area via kayak or via boat, the bio-bay is a wondrous vision at night.. a blue glow that responds to movement, you can see fish zipping through the water. Kayaking into the bay is awesome, many tour companies go out there, be sure to avoid perfumes and chemicals to protect the bay. Only use biodegradable eco-safe repellant. Make sure to wear long pants, sneakers and bring a flashlight.
Fajardo Lighthouse and Las Cabezas Reserve
Run by a non-profit, check out all of their offerings here. This reserve area boasts pristine beaches, a historical lighthouse (which just so happens to be the southernmost point of the Bermuda Triangle) and excellent mangroves that have miles of bearwalks running through them. There are day and night tours and a portion of the beach is also known for it’s great surfing.
Launching Pad to Vieques and Culebra
Fajardo boasts both an airport and a ferry terminal that are the launching padsto get to Culebran and Vieques. For a couple of dollars, you can catch a ride to either island, each with their own unique vibe.
Snorkeling and Sailing among pristine Islands and Cays
Fajardo is the jumping off point for many of the best snorkeling and sailing excursions in Puerto Rico. Icacos is one of a string of cays which form the Cordillera Cays Nature Reserve. “Pirates of the Caribbean 4” was filmed in the area, in particular on Palominito, a small Island surrounded by coral reefs featuring incredible turquoise water, pure white sand beaches and a lovely view back to the mainland. Just adjacent, you will find Palomino Island that is the exclusive private beach of the El Conquistador Resort, and home to our beach store Island Outpost Gift Shop. Because these islands do not have river run-off, the snorkeling is always great with excellent visibility.
Balneario Seven Seas
The public beach in Fajardo is a Blue Flag beach. It can get very busy in the summer months but is often empty in the winter. It is a small, crescent-shaped beach, with soft sand and almond and palm trees that provide some protection from the sun. The views are fantastic, just beautiful to look out at the water and see the lighthouse in the distance. There is a coral reef some distance from the beach, making a natural wave break. The waves are minimal, so this is a good beginner’s snorkeling beach. It is a campground and there are several ‘hidden’ trails that take you into the mangroves and to other smaller beaches. It’s maintenance is sporadic, so it is not always perfect, but it is a great option overall.
Boating in Fajardo Puerto Rico
Fajardo is known as Puerto Rico’s boating capital, and the town is chock full of marinas and companies offering boat services and repair. If you are looking for a fishing charter or boat-related activities, Fajardo is a great place to start. In addition, the largest marina Puerto del Rey just got new owners which plan a $145 million investment, which will most likely include additional housing, docks and expanded services.
