Puerto Rico Events – January 2013

puerto rico events

January is fast approaching and we are still going to be in holiday-mode.  There are so many Puerto Rico events to enjoy.   The holidays last through the 3rd week of January.  In addition to the Puerto Rico events listed below, keep your eyes out for Parrandas (caroling caravans) and such holiday treats such as Turron and Coquito.

Here are the big things happening on the island this January:

January 5: The Fiesta de Reyes Isabelinos is held every year in the city of Isabela. Takes place in the Town Square (Plaza Manuel Maria Corchado y Juarbe) that consists of a “Velorio de Reyes,” which is a traditional song that honors the Magi. Other activities include an arts and crafts fair and traditional Puerto Rican cuisine and beverages.

January 5: Traditional Three Kings Concert with the Symphonic Orchestra of Puerto Rico.  Dor more information, click here

January 5: WWE Smack Down World Tour 2013 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José M. Agrelot, San Juan

January 6: Mercado Urbano, Urban Farmer’s Market in Ventana del Mar, Condado

January 6: Three King’s Day.  This holiday celebrates the Three King’s arrival to give gifts to the baby Jesus.  It is celebrated with  a charming tradition of setting out a box of hay at the foot of your bed the night before with small gifts.  Be sure to leave some hay and treats for the Three King’s along with their camels!  In Old San Juan, head to Luis Muñoz Marín Park for the live music, parades, food and drink, and plenty of revelry.

January 9: The La Sagrada Familia Festival in Corozal

Through January 12: La Feria The Park in San Juan.  Annual amusement park, with rides, shows, music, and food at the Hiram Bithorn stadium in San Juan

January 17: San Antonio Abad Festival in Añasco

January 18-20: The largest street fair in Old San Juan is the San Sebastián Patron Saint Festival, when thousands descend on San Sebastián Street to commemorate and celebrate. It’s by far the biggest patron saint celebration on the island. Expect fairground rides, food stalls and live music, parades of traditional Puerto Rican masked figures called vejigantes, and plenty of dancing at night. A day earlier, the town of San Sebastián kicks off its own festival to honor its patron saint.

January 25-26: Puerto Rico Jazz Jam at the Tapia Theatre in San Juan

January 25-27: Hard-core cyclists will want to register for La Vuelta Puerto Rico, a three-day, 375-mile spin around the island. Registration is open until January 15.

January 25-27: Local artisans exhibit at EL Portal Visitor’s Center in EL Yunque Rainforest

January 27: Heineken Ventana al JazzFest, Condado. Live Jazz (FREE), on the last Sunday of every month at Ventana al Mar, Ashford Ave, Condado

Through January 31: Beginning of  whale-watching season in Rincón and the west coast of the island.  An excellent spot to see them is the observation park at the Rincón lighthouse.
