The Serrallés story begins in 1865 at the Hacienda Mercedita sugar plantation, near the city of Ponce, on Puerto Rico’s south coast. That year, Don Juan Serrallés, the son of a Spaniard who had settled in the area, produced his first few casks of rum using a still he had imported from France. Today, more than a century later, Don Juan’s greatgrandson, Félix Juan Serrallés, Jr., presides over a company that produces and distributes most of the rum sold on the island.
While famous for its rum – particularly its flagship Don Q label – Serrallés is much more than just another rum producer. With annual sales totalling over $100 million in 1998, Serrallés is a large industrial and marketing enterprise that produces or distributes more than 80 different product lines. This is the story of Serrallés, a company that has combined traditional values with the most advanced technology to become one of the Island’s leading manufacturing and marketing firms. Don Q is considered the local favorite and dominates market share on the Island.
Don Q makes a variety of rums as noted below:
Don Q Cristal
Clear. Subtle, tropical flower nose. A round entry leads to a smooth, very dry, medium-bodied palate with sugarcane stalk and dried herbs. Finishes with a snappy, peppery fade. A very nice, understated, mixing-style rum (Source: Beverage Testing Institute)
