Built in the sixteenth century and located at the corners of bastions, these striking features of El Morro and San Cristobal Castles in Old San Juan were used to keep watch on not only the landward and seaward approaches to the forts but also the base of the great walls. The silhouette of the garita if often used as a symbol of Puerto Rico.
